The following programs are presented by Jane Blair of ArtMatters, offered with the support of the Friends of Carlisle Council on Aging and Friends of Gleason Public Library through the Paulson Family Giving Account.     AMERICAN WATERCOLORS

    Most people think that watercolor is an elegant but simple painting medium. However, the only thing easy about painting with watercolors is cleaning them up. It is truly one of the most difficult means of realistic expression. Some of the few to succeed in this subtle and beautiful medium happened to be Americans. Join us for a presentation that focuses on the medium of watercolor. We will look at the work of some great American watercolorists including John James Audubon, Winslow Homer, and John Singer Sargent.

    PAUL CEZANNE

    'Compared to me, all my compatriots were idiots!'. So claimed Post Impressionist Paul Cezanne. Indeed, it was from his work that much of the 20th century truly sprang. Matisse called Cezanne 'The Mother of us all.' Picasso called Cezanne 'The Father of us all', and defended his name with a pistol.

    Join us to see just what all the fuss was about.

    MARY CASSATT and EDGAR DEGAS

    An American woman and a French Chauvinist, as unlikely a pair as any you can find, were friends and some say lovers, at the very heart of a radical revolution in art. Impressionism changed the art world forever. Cassatt and Degas influenced the times almost as much as they affected each other. Join us for a look at their mirrored careers, their relationship with each other and the times in which they lived.

Join the Friends of the Carlisle Council on Aging and Friends of Gleason Public Library for this two-part Zoom lecture series, this October.
  • Wednesday, October 6, 1:30 p.m.: Musical Theater.
    We will look/listen to songs from: West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Company, South Pacific, Nine, Les Mis , The Man From La Mancha and others.


  • Wednesday, October 13, 1:30 p.m.: The Great American Song Book
    'Standard' tunes that we all know and love. We will look and listen to: Embraceable You, Come Rain or Come Shine, Falling in Love with Love, A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes, Unforgettable, and more.

    Brian M. O'Connell is Director and Founder of the Sarteano Chamber Choral Conducting Workshop in Tuscany since 2004. Brian received his master’s degree in Choral Conducting and Certification in Voice Therapy from Boston Conservatory. At Boston University he completed all his course work for his Doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching with Music Education emphasis.

  Brian has been on the faculties of seven institutions of higher education: Berklee College, Boston University, Tufts, Northeastern, New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory and UMass/Lowell. He has also taught at Lexington and Cambridge Rindge and Latin high schools.

Please indicate in your registration at gleasonlibrary.org/events or when you call 978- 369-4898, which way you prefer to attend if we offer an in-person/online hybrid. In-person seating will be limited and prioritized based on registration date.

Presented by Jason Giannetti, Esquire, an Immigration lawyer who received a Jurist Doctor degree from Boston College of Law, a Master’s of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School, and a Master’s of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University.



Stepping Stone to Oblivion: A History of the U.S. Vice-Presidency

Tuesday, October 26 1:30-2:30 PM

Join historian Paolo Di Gregorio as he talks about the difficult position of the number two job in the American government. The Vice Presidency comes with a title, but very little power, and often less respect. This lecture will look at the history of the vice presidency, the office, and the men and woman who have held it.

Paolo Di Gregorio, the Artifactual Scholar, is a historian, archaeologist, and educator with a passion for telling the stories of our past. He has presented numerous historical lectures and discussions on a variety of topics in American, European, and World history.
